The Sunday Best Makes Sunday Worth Looking Forward to
by: The Editor | June 6, 2010

A Portland based community supported documentary website, The Sunday Best, posts new audio slideshows on Sundays (at this point, it seems, every other week). The labor of love of photographer and Salt Institute for Documentary Studies graduate Natalie Conn and  self-described "writer, editor, kitchen scientist, bicyclist, photographer" Peter Smith, The Sunday Best tells the stories of "ordinary people doing extraordinary things." It's a compelling form, sometimes just a single picture, like the photo of sailor Roger Woodman up in the rigging of a schooner, or sometimes a timed slideshow like today's posting of Scarborough Police Explorer and Army medic Grace McKenzie, always with a soundtrack of the subjects voice talking about what they do. Most of the pieces have been created by Conn and Smith, but some have been donated by fellow documentarians and Salt alums. The Sunday Best also accepts financial donations to further the work. It's a worthy experiment in what they call "crowdfunded multimedia," and one we hope continues to succeed.
