The profile of Portland, Maine, in the June issue of US Airways magazine goes way beyond the clichéd lobster and lighthouse treatment we often see. The real story, they show, is not the scenery but the creative economy. Considering that most airline passengers are fixated on the meal they hope to enjoy when they arrive rather than the meal they may tolerate on board, it is not surprising that they play the dining angle strongly. Lots of local foodies are featured: Dean Bingham of Dean's Sweets, Samantha Hoyt Lindgren of Rabelais, Erik Desjarlais of Evangeline, Sam Hayward of Fore Street, Rob Evans of Hugo's, Krista Kern Desjarlais of Bresca as well as mentions for Local 188, Caiola’s, Sonny’s, El Rayo Taqueria, and Nosh Kitchen Bar. The other group of passengers they are trying to speak to are the business travelers who would rather be thinking about the business they hope to launch rather than the business they are traveling for. Lots of innovative local business people are quoted extolling the benefits of growing a business in Portland: William Sulinski of AccelGolf, Andy Graham of Portland Color, Meredith Alex of The Madhouse, Mary Allen Lindemann and Alan Spear of Coffee By Design, Rob Mitchell of Browne Trading Company and John and Brendan Ready of Ready Seafood. A good job, but if they had just included a link to LiveWorkPortland we would have been happier!
