Bard is very expensive and the barristers rarely give you your change. A regular cup of coffee is $2.40. I have been there several times and given the barrister $2.50 and I have never gotten my change back. Arabica is a much better choice; the service is better, the price is better and the coffee is better.

[...] And there I had it! That was my lead, that was my angle. What I had seen at the Juice conference was that the intersection of the creative economy and the innovation economy in Maine was being powered by a larger than average concentration of “tweakers.” What I have found in Portland and now in this network of innovation clusters spreading throughout the state is that kind of engineering of the possible that powered the Industrial Revolution and could well power the Post-Industrial one. And not only that. Just as I managed to get Ashton Kutcher into the headline and the lead of this post (quite organically, I think) I managed to get Steve Jobs into the LiveWork Portland post!
I'm partly playing Devil's advocate. I like much of the art the site's shown on its vendors page. But I don't think the juried aspect is intended to keep the work local and to keep out the mass-produced. In that case an application process would say "gotta be in Portland" and that would be the gate keeping mechanism. Jurying might be necessary ...because Lincoln Park is not that large. Anything promoting the arts is good, I think, but I'm smart enough about art that I know my tastes are different from Betty's. I encourage everyone to connect with and promote the arts and art making, but I'm not a fan of provincial attitudes trying to determine what's "good" and what's not. Art in the Park in SOPO 2 weeks ago was great because there was an enormous variety of work. Picnic seems limited, which doesn't mean I won't go.

If there is a filter, it seems to be more about making sure that all of the vendors are the makers of original stuff and that they're making it in Portland. The juried aspect may be necessary to prevent the creep of the homogenous, the mass-produced, the dreck. From my experience there last year, it felt very inclusive and a whole lot of fun. Great family event. perfect if your kids need to shop for a friend's birthday party and don't want to show up with the same thing as anyone else!

Good post. Best kind of a supportive audience is one able to pay for art and the services of creatives. It's the economy.

Picnic is fine, but it's juried, which is a drag and seems rather cliquish. What's quality is subjective. If Picnic's curators are trying to set an aesthetic for their event, that's fine, but they should choose to do so in a place other than a public park.

San Jose CA has two Cambodian Restaurants, both named Chez Sovan.
There is already a small film scene in SoPo, with Lone Wolf Productions based there, Chris Bohler's outfit, and an upstart web series. Lone Wolf does "big" work without ruffling any feathers; it seems premature to worry about LA in Maine! This is interesting, and I for one am happy that that beautiful building will be getting some attention.

No sooner had I posted this that I picked up an issue of the New Yorker from last fall and read this quote by the Israeli writer David Grossman describing the impact of discovering the stories of of Polish Jewish writer Bruno Schultz:

"Reading his works made me realize that, in our day-to-day routines, we feel our lives most when they are running out: as we age, as we lose our physical abilities, our health, and, of course, family members and friends who are important to us. Then we pause for a moment, sink into ourselves, and feel: here was something, and now it is gone. It will not return. And it may be that we understand it, truly and deeply, only when it is lost. But when we read Schultz, page by page, we sense the words returning to their source, to the strongest and most authentic pulse of the life within them. Suddenly we want more. Suddenly we know that it is possible to want more, that life is greater than what grows dim with us and steadily fades away."
