Day Trip: Tumbledown Mountain
August 1, 2012 / by Christian MilNeil / Spending the summer in Portland is pretty great, with our parks, hiking trails, and beaches within city limits or a short bike ride away. But another wonderful thing about living here is our proximity to a lot of other great places in northern New England.

Planning Your Heat Wave Escape to Portland
July 29, 2012 / by Christian MilNeil / Since it's summertime, we've been seeing lots of visitors (on the web and in real life) from the broiling cities of southern New England and the mid-Atlantic. If you're one of those people looking for a weekend getaway to the refreshingly mild, beachy shores of Casco Bay, here are a few travel tips from someone who makes the Portland-to-NYC trip pretty regularly.

New Energy from the Ocean
July 25, 2012 / by Christian MilNeil / For centuries, Portland's working waterfront has delivered natural resources from the ocean to the city and the world beyond. Now, after several years of targeted research and development from the State of Maine and the private sector, Portland is emerging as a small hub for emerging renewable energy technologies that can harness some of the Gulf of Maine's fierce ocean energy to help power homes and businesses throughout New England.

But a cadre of knitters just escalated the arms race — or should I say "yarnms race"? — with a huge installation covering the "Michael" sculpture downtown.

Portland XO
June 7, 2012 / by Christian MilNeil / A local studio, Portland Post Production, which bills itself as the only Autodesk Smoke facility in northern New England, shows off their capabilities in this slick video of Portland's people and places. I suggest watching this in full-screen mode.

"Gentlemen of the Road" Tour Invites Audiences to Enjoy Some Portland with Their Music
June 1, 2012 / by Christian MilNeil / It wouldn't be much of a stretch to nickname it "North by Northeast": In August, British folk rockers Mumford & Sons will embark on a rare tour to this side of the Atlantic, and their only stopover on the East Coast will be located on the very brim of it, right here in Portland, on the Eastern Promenade overlooking Casco Bay. With only six performances in all, in unique locations, the "Gentlemen of the Road" tour makes a point of being a unique music festival — one that encourages their audience to enjoy the hosting community as much as they enjoy the music.
