I write, I teach writing and I shoot pictures

Job Writer, photographer / freelance

Lives In Portland, off the peninsula

No matter the assignment, there’s a story to tell. I am a journalist who writes for national, regional and local publications. I cover diverse subjects, from the arts to science stories, and write essays, book and film reviews, and reported pieces. I also shoot pictures.

As a photographer, I have often taken pictures to go with the stories I write, and I've learned they can tell a part of the story the writing might not reach. I also love to take portraits of artists, performers, children and families.

Why did you choose Portland? The minute I thought of it, it was obvious.

What do you like to do with out-of-towners? Eat and walk.

Where's your "happy place" on the peninsula? Arabica and anything walking distance from there, which is pretty much . . . all of Portland.

What's the most surprising thing about this city? Portland has everything you need, plus most of what you want.

What's your favorite indulgence and where do you find it? Belgian fries, good beer and a salad with a side of duck confit at Duckfat.

What's the most under-appreciated place or thing in town? Our library. It is a gem of a building redesign: it lets in beautiful light, it's in a perfect spot, and it's modern yet fits in with all our 19th Century buildings. If they don't have a book you want they'll probably order it for you, and the fines are low.

Describe your perfect night—and the following morning—in Portland. Music and margaritas, then breakfast at Bintliff's in the morning.

Do you have a serendipity spot? Where do you always bump into good people? Videoport, Arabica and our fantastic library.
